Our words matter... again

Yep, still on my soapbox. Not only do our words matter as real estate agents when we are choosing to call the largest bedroom in the home a “primary bedroom” or “owner’s bedroom” but they matter when we say things like a bathroom has “his and hers sinks”.  Really? Really? Why are we still saying these things? I know I sound like that progressive you share an office with who’s always so PC and you’re just rolling your eyes at them all day (I definitely am that person - I’m looking at your ECR), but truly, if you can change your phrasing ever-so-slightly to something that will not offend a large demographic, why not do it? Is it laziness? Is it an unwillingness to understand other people? Or is it that you simply haven’t thought about it? I’m hoping it’s that last one.

I worked in weddings for a long time and it killed me to show couples our “getting ready” areas at my property that were very distinctly designed for straight couples. They were not remotely similar spaces, so if you had a same-sex couple, one had to concede the larger space with more mirrors and room for friends/family to the other, and it just wasn’t right. More often than not, couples were very understanding of the set-up and didn’t act like they minded at all, but they shouldn’t have needed to be so understanding because it shouldn’t have been that way in the first place.

In this same way, why can’t we just call a vanity with two sinks a double vanity, rather than saying it has “his and hers sinks”? Personally, I think we can all handle making that change, and our LGBTQ+ siblings deserve for us to try a little harder.
